Small preemie

Cast on 41 stitches using 3.5mm needles and dk yarn

3.5 inches across and 3 inches from top to bottom, takes 7grams of dk yarn

Rows 1 & 3: *k1, p1 repeat from * until the last stitch, k1

Row 2: *p1, k1 repeat from * until last stitch, p1

Change to 4mm needles

Row 4: purl

Row 5 and alternative rows: knit

Row 6: p20, k1, p20

Row 8: p19, k3, p19

Row 10: p18, k5, p18

Row 12: p17, k7, p17

Row 14: p17, k7, p17

Row 16: p17, k3, p1, k3, p17

Row 18: p18, k1, p3, k1, p18

Row 19: knit

Row 20: purl

 Decrease

Starting on a knit row

Row 1: *k4, k2tog, repeat from * until last 5 stitches, k5

Row 2 and alternative rows: purl

Row 3: *k3, k2tog, repeat from * until end of row

Row 5: *k2, k2tog repeat from * until end of row

Row 7: *k1, k2tog repeat from * until end of row

Row 9: *k2tog repeat from * until end of row

Cut length of yarn leaving a tail of yarn for sewing 

Using a tapestry needle thread through the remaining stitches, draw them together and sew up seam, using the tails of yarn into the work.

 

Med preemie

Cast on 51 stitches using 3.5mm needles and dk yarn

Measures 4x4.5inches and takes 11grams of yarn

Rows 1 & 3: *k1, p1 repeat from * until the last stitch, k1

Rows 2 & 4: *p1, k1 repeat from * until last stitch, p1

Change to 4mm needles

Row 5 and alternative rows: knit

Row 6: purl

Row 8: p25, k1, p25

Row 10: p24, k3, p24

Row 12: p23, k5, p23

Row 14: p22, k7, p22

Rows 16 & 18: p21, k9, p21,

Rows 20: p21, k4, p1, k4, p21

Row 22: p22, k2, p3, k2, p22

Continue in stocking stitch until the hat measures 3 inches from cast on.

Decrease:  

Row 1: *k4, k2tog repeat from * until last 3 stitches, k3

Row 2 and alternative rows: purl

Row 3: *k3, k2tog, repeat from * until last 3 st, k3

Row 5: *k2, k2tog repeat from * until last 3st, k3 

Row 7: *k1, k2 tog, repeat until end of the row. 

Row 9: *knit 2 tog, repeat until end of the row.

Large preemie

Cast on 61 stitches using 3.5mm needles and dk yarn

Measures 5x5.5inches and takes 16grams of yarn

Row 2: *p1, k1 repeat from * until last stitch, p1

Repeat these 2 rows twice more.

Change to 4mm needles

Row 7 and alternative rows: knit

Row 8: purl

Row 10: p30, k1, p30

Row 12: p29, k3, p29

Row 14: p28, k5, p28

Row 16: p27, k7, p27

Rows 18 & 20: p26, k9, p26,

Rows 22: p26, k4, p1, k4, p26

Row 24: p27, k2, p3, k2, p27

Continue in stocking stitch until the hat measures 4 inches from cast on.

Decrease: 

Row 1: *k5, k2tog repeat until from * until last 5st, k5

Row 2 and alternative rows: purl

Row 3: *k4, k2tog repeat from * until last 5st, k5

Row 5: *k3, k2tog repeat from * until end of the row

Change to 4mm needles

Row 8: purl

Row 9 and alternative rows: knit

Row 10: p35, k1, p35

Row 12: p34, k3, p34

Row 14: p33, k5, p33

Row 16: p32, k7, p32

Rows 18 & 20: p31, k9, p31,

Rows 22: p31, k4, p1, k4, p31

Row 24: p32, k2, p3, k2, p32

Continue in stocking stitch until the hat measures 5 inches from cast on.

Decrease:

Repeat these 2 rows 3 more times.

Change to 4mm needles

Row 10: purl

Row 14: p39, k3, p39

Row 16: p38, k5, p38

Row 18: p37, k7, p37

Rows 20: p36, k9, p36

Row 22: p35, k11, p35

Rows 24, 26 & 28: p34, k13, p34

Row 30: p35, k5, p1, k5, p35

Row 32: p36, k3, p3, k3, p36

Continue in stocking stitch until the hat measures 6inches from cast on.
